Thanks for the reminder Frank, that's a trick I've tried before with some success. I must confess that in the comparatively modern teak-and-brushed aluminium setting of the Philips N4308, I didn't even consider the ol' germanium 'whisker' problem. In my mind that's firmly associated with transistor radios from what you might call the 'rexine period' - early 60s.  Whacking the AC187 in this recorder with a screwdriver certainly causes some loud pops and cracks through the speaker, so it's a wrong 'un alright.

Just to conclude this thread, a replacement AC187 arrived in record time and all is now well. The faulty AC187 I removed has a short from base to the body. I may try zapping it with a charged cap as suggested by Frank just out of interest to see if I can revive it.
