And Yet Another Ekco TMB272
Hi all,
A couple of years ago I restored an Ekco TMB272 http://www.forum.radios-tv.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=6972&hilit=+ekco+tmb272 which has turned out to be a good reliable little telly then by chance a while ago I found another one of these little monsters at a farm in North Yorkshire and for a fiver I thought it would make a good source of spares, it even has it's original McMurdo mains lead with it !
It's now been sat on a shelf in my workshop for 18 months drying out from it's spell in a barn, it looks fair on the outside but not so good on the in. Rust has formed round the base of the chassis and 'Daz' has appeared on the alloy bits also most of the waxys have decade or split wide open plus there are tons of 'orible 'unts to deal with, a couple of valves are missing but the CRT tests to be a corker so I think it's worth a shot at getting it going.

When I collected 405 sets the TMB-272 was high on my list of wants, I never managed to find one at a reasonable price though. The fact you found one for a fiver is amazing!! either you were very lucky or the bottom has continued to fall out of the 405 set market.
look forward to your repair report and as you rightly say the CRT is going to be a corker. Looking at the internals makes me realise I've been spoilt working on PCB sets, I'd forgotten just how much of a rats nest hard wired sets are, I certainly don't miss all those sticky hunts

Flippin' heck, Marc, I was expecting a right old dog of set from your description.. That's quite a tidy thing really, and well worth a go - even that LOPT looks like it's almost new!
Granted, you don't often find (well, I don't) waxies all split open like that.. I bet they read a bit leaky?..
Hi Chris, Marion and all.
Chris, I was just very lucky with the price of this set, since getting mine I've seen them fetching £100+ if they have their correct mains lead. As for the 'rats nest' well, you just don't know what you're missing !
Marion, the photo's do make the chassis look better than it really is, it's not a basket case by any means but no looker either compared with others I've seen.
After looking a little closer at the set I've found the combined 'on/off, volume, brightness' control is seized solid so I've left the shafts soaking in WD40, I'll try working it free tomorrow. The missing valves are EL81 & EY81 which typically I can't find in my stores....PL & PY how many do you want but EL & EY

No promises here, but I might just have one of those valves in my box of "ex equipment" valves.. I'll have a quick scan when I can, and let you know.. If you're extremely lucky, I might have both, but if you can find them elsewhere, grab them anyway.
Hi Marion,
If I can't find any valves in the 'other' stores tomorrow I'll pop a wanted ad on the forum anyway as I need 'both' valves. I could borrow the valves from my other TMB272 to get this one up and running at a push.

Hi all,
I've not managed a lot of time on the Ekco today but bathing the volume/brightness pot shaft with WD40 has done the trick, it turns nicely now for both functions....but (isn't there always one) the on/off doesn't work and is o/c on both poles.
I removed the pot from the set and began to take it apart, bending back the securing tags to remove the switch section and finally drilling out the rivets to get inside the switch which revealed the spring has completely rotted away. Searching through my stores I found another 'Morganite' switch pot and took that apart to rob the switch from only to find that that switch had also suffered the same rotted spring fate !....Anyone got a switch pot going spare ????
The last photo shows the remains of the hairpin spring as a lump of rust right in the middle.

Hi Marc, in my box of used and dismantled pots, I have a Morganite Type V switch section. It looks exactly like your broken switch and is yours if you want it FOC.
Just PM your details, and I'll post it to you

Hi Brian,
Thanks very much indeed, I spent a good deal of time yesterday sifting through my stock of valves only to turn up with a few dozen PL & PY with not a sniff of any E series At all.
PM on it's way.

Hi all,
Not a lot to report today but whilst I'm waiting for the very kindly donated parts to arrive (cheers Andrew & Brian) I thought I would take a look at the split and rotten wax caps and as it turned out they were either fully O/C or dead short so the lot of them will be replaced well before this little Ekco gets a sniff of any volts. There are also lots of the dreaded 'orible 'unts where the lead out wires have dropped off ! so again all these will have to be replaced.

Hi Marc. I have found two NOS EL81s for you and they will be posted today but the only EY81 I had was a dead as a Dodo! I will post the EL81s today but unfortunately I have to say no can do to the EY81s. Sorry for my mistake and the potential delay caused!

Hi Brian,
No worries, one missing is better than both. At least for the purpose of testing I can borrow an EY81 out of my other Ekco.
Cheers,
Marc.

I have some of those 'E' series TV valves. I'll have a look to see if there is an EY81 amongst them.
