It looks far worse now it's not behind glass. Out with the paint stripper and fast please !
It'll be interesting to see what is revealed once that paint is off and how much 'refinishing' it will need to get it's original look back.

It's a new hi-viz colour!
"think you should keep it as it is, give it pride of place in your living room. Perhaps paint the rest of the room to match it?"
Imagine living or working in a room with walls painted that colour.
"can’t look much more as it is causing screen-burn on my monitor !!"
Can't use the picture as a screen saver, more likely as a screen destroyer.
And to think I've denied some Hipster type the ownership of this beautiful piece of art.

I could have understood the painting of the cabinet better if they had chosen a neutral colour that would tone in with any room, but that colour, oh dear.
Perhaps they thought it would be just a window display item so required it to be a talking point to draw people into the shop.
No doubt it will look much more pleasant in a short while. Do you have sun glasses to wear while working on it David?
Frank
Hi Frank, I've reloaded the set in the L200. Fortunately it's the pick-up truck with the rear canopy so no one can see what I've bought. Let's get it in to the workshop without any delay and strip that awful paint off. It's pity in a sense because the actual quality of the finish is very good indeed. Better not work on the cabinet in well illuminated areas. Eye protection essential.

Ye Ghads!
I once wondered what early colour TVs looked like - well, I can safely say I've never seen one that colour before!
Anyway, verdigris..... That cabinet looks just like the encrustations that used to grace many a car battery terminal in times gone by.
I wonder if Superman would be safe near that paint?
You're going to need a few tins of.........
"It's all done in the best possible taste!"

Returning to planet Earth for a moment,
What's the plan for the missing speaker grille? Will it be faithfully restored to resemble the original? Or are you looking at something simpler, but in keeping with the period?
Marion
Hi Marion,
An exact replica of the original 'speaker grill will be made, including all those eighteen vertical slats! Just to make things just a little bit more difficult the grill is curved. In the Decca 121 a portion of the grill can be removed to expose the pre-set controls. We'll have to establish if the 101 direct view model employs something similar to access the presets.
I've contacted the owner of a 101 and he will be emailing me pictures of the internals of the set.
With regard to the Decca 1000 chassis I have to decide if all the existing circuits are to be retained including those thyratron oscillators or remove almost all the timebase components and rewire it into a circuit that resembles the much simpler Plessey Mark 1, the circuits employed in my Beau Decca project. Either way the EHT will be generated from the line flyback. The power supply arrangements will have to be considered. Decide whether to employ the simple "live chassis technique" or do it properly and employ a mains transformer for full mains isolation. The latter solution is much better if the set is to be placed on display.

Hi David,
I wonder what the shop did with the original bits from the Grille... Did you ever establish what became of the original chassis?

Hi Marion,
Seems all the internal components were disposed of even before the shop acquired the cabinet.
Looks like this is going to be a difficult job, but that's OK, I don't do easy.
