A quick update on progress so far.
Electronically things have been straightforward although rather fiddly around the IF area where I still have a slight microphony. I have sound now, many thanks to Mike (@Cathovisor) supplying a SOPT.
The cabinet is coming along, having treated the woodworm and touched in some of the water damage on top.
The main problem is focus. After some reading up on this I realised that I should never had taken the seized focus assembly apart. Before this the initial focus was ok'ish but had a sort of astigmatism whereby the top right of the screen was quite defocussed, so I thought I'd strip it down, give it a clean and get it moving smoothly - oh dear I hear you say....
Despite hours of fiddling I now can't get a decent focus, being worse than when first disassembled. The Trader sheet advises that the 'sleeve should never be removed from the magnet as this will tend to demagnetize the magnet'. So I've learned a lesson!
However on doing some research I stumbled across this excellent thread on UKVRRR:
https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/showthread.php?p=1191874
So I'm thinking of giving this a try, and maybe contact 'Line Sync' (in the above thread) for more information. Has anyone tried or have experience of doing this?
Pete

I wonder if a Hornby-Dublo motor remagnetiser could be used for this? ("No, it's too small" is the answer).
This is a common problem for those of us who play with 70+ year old trains, especially those with horseshoe magnets. Dismantling the motor ruins the magnet.

I spent quite a while experimenting with remagnetising the focus assembly (not for the faint hearted, plenty of sparks and heat!). The tube is a bit soft, maybe a little gassy. The focus is better although not brilliant. It varied from the centre to the edges, so I had to equalise the focus errors across the screen.
The cabinet and woodworm were addressed. I'm no woodworker, but it's OKish now. Regarding the mask I used the same technique as on my TV22, gently rubbing down and spraying with filler primer, then a matt topcoat of left over paint from our kitchen units - surprising flexible, and has been ok for four years now on the TV22.....
Quite glad to have finished this, can't wait to get on with my BRC 1500!
Here's a couple of pics.

Excellent results!

Excellent job! Looks beautiful.

That's a lovely looking set - you've done a great job!

Great stuff. I have a Philips 1756U that also has magnetic focus, the ring magnets have parted company with frame they are mounted on and are now loose on the neck. The cause was the adhesive had decomposed so I will obvious try out the method you did with yours to hopefully get the focus and geometry to somewhere near decent.
John.

Hi John, I took quite a few photos of the remagnetising process, let me know if you need them when you're ready.
Pete

Thanks Pete, that’s great. No problems with batteries, I have several hundred Ah if needed😁
John.
