@wayned If you think my origins and locale are middle class you're sorely mistaken...

@cathovisor don't get me wrong, I assume most of us here are from working class backgrounds, particularly the ex-TV repair guys.
However, the levels of poverty up here, even what I saw growing up in the 80s and particularly what I've been told about in the 50s, 60s and 70s, it's always been grim. One relative described his childhood in the 1950s in Scotswood, he hates Christmas even today because it just a time of misery for him.
