Its a pity you cant build a tv for £9 today 🙁 . .. cheers neil.
There are quite a few articles in magazines of the 1950s describing sets to build using the VCR97 6" or the VCR138A 3" radar tubes. Many of the "older" guys on the forum have built them and are indeed, building them again now. They're great fun to build and it is good experience on both construction techniques and fault finding and there is always something to tweak to get the set going properly. Once you've got a CRT and base and a suitable mains transformer, it's not too expensive but I did have trouble finding enough coil formers for mine. Go on, give it a go
a bit beyound me .i also have the plans including the blueprint for the simplex receiver from practical television vol 4 no46 march 1954
it uses the vcr97

Hi Rob
I'm in the process (it seems to be taking a long time) of building the Simple TV. I have the articles but not the blueprint but there is plenty of info in the articles. There are a few problems but I've had a raster of sorts on the screen but I think the VCR97 I've got is a bit low on emission. The EHT is 1.5kV but the raster is very dim! I'll see if I can get another tube.
here is the simplex blueprint
rob t
Interesting Trevor. I got a raster on my Simplex today but I had to add a decoupling cap on the static Y plate to get sensible field deflection. Have you found this? The linearity is also c**p but I'm working on it.
I wonder if there's a problem with the smoothing on the frame side. What does it look like on the scope?
Cheers,
Steve P.
Did you find that the values given resulted in the correct timebase frequencies Trevor? I had to nearly double the cap values in the Transitron oscillators to get to 10.125 and 50. The flyback is too slow now so I will experiment with both cap and resistor changes and see what happens. I had a recognisable test card up last night so I'm getting there but I have a sneaking suspicion that my CRT is on the low side - I will ask Gerry at Crowthorne Tubes if he can help.
