One ugly tv
This little GEC transportable BT316 has to be a contender for the most ugly tv I’ve ever seen
The BT316 is a 17 inch set with a similar chassis to the more popular and far better looking BT318, I say similar chassis because there are some subtle differences like the absence of a focus adjustment & fitted with a wire ended eht rectifier & a 30p12 sound output.
The set has undergone a full recap to replace all those horrible hunts capacitors apart from a couple of resistors in the focus network & replacement of the selenium rectifier & a darn good clean nothing else has been done
before switch on the crt was tested ( I know I should of done this before the recap) but it just slipped my mind ( it’s an age thing ) anyway I got a 100% reading on my leader crt tester
after setting up got this
The other thing that I found odd was the implosion guard is glass & not Perspex as you would expect on a transportable .

I think it is cute. The picture looks good.
It has a bit of a dirty look, maybe it is a leatherette/vinyl covering. Would it come up looking nicer with a going over with a tooth brush and one of the milder kitchen spray cleaners. If you want a more aggressive cleaner I use bathroom foam spray. I fill a can lid with the foam and then brush it on to the fablon/vinyl a small area at a time, then wipe off with a clean cloth. It seems very good at removing ingrained dirt.
But be careful test an area first, dont get it on chromed or metallised plastic logo badges, it can remove the metallising.

I suppose it is a bit funny looking! I guess it was made to be in competition with sets like the Pye PV110.
I have a Hacker Herald in a similar colour rexine case, I cleaned it with leather car seat cleaner spray from Wilko, and an old toothbrush. Came up like new, but the pattern on it makes it look like it’s still dirty!
good picture on the GEC, looks nicely made inside too.

Lloyd
I quite like it, quirky looking !
That would have been someone’s pride and joy 60 years ago. Is there a mains dropper resistor in the chassis or an auto transformer, not a lot of room to vent the heat from a dropper. Typical GEC type chassis of that era.
Edit. Just notice the cabinet back, AC DC so must be a dropper resistor.
Looks good.

Nice chassis, shame about the face. ?
But it is a piece of history and good to have in working order. Cracking picture too. ?
To understand the black art of electronics is to understand witchcraft. Andrew.
It was clearly styled to match GEC's 'Transistor Seven' portable radio.

Hi.
I think the Murphy V230 is a far worse looking set than you little GEC and yes I am a Murphy fan.
Cheers,
Trevor.

Its certainly an unusual looking set, but have to say I'm impressed with the layout inside and by the screen images you've got a healthy CRT. Nice work!
