B&W TV Philips 17TG100U

Thanks to Chris's help with the manual, I have embarked on this set which came to me recently.Â
I'll document it on my youTube channel, as well as here, as we go, but things are already looking , well , not so much grim, as perhaps dim!
It may not be so bad. Let's get to first light...
Â

First light... looks like I may need a yoke...

@doz A very good approach to getting the set going and entertaining! I enjoyed watching that! I heard those type of Philips coils gave trouble do they short between windings or go partially open? I had one of these sets many years ago, I wanted to get it going as I heard how well they performed but the LOPT was duff. I eventually gave it away.

It's all coming along very well...
It looks like Bernard Smith saved Christmas in 1967! I love finding stuff like this. I wonder if he's still with us?

Well, that was better than expected. After sorting out the arcing EHT rectifier heater winding, by removing it, and twiddling a few controls, the picture's damn good! Tube's a bit soft round the edges, but I'm hoping it'll improve after a bit of a run.Â
Thanks to @wayned for the idea to try the microwave oven diodes... they work really well! Even if they shouldn't !
@doz nice work!
I do suspect that these microwave diodes are way over-engineered for what they are. The high frequency doesn't seem to be an issue when they're used with the low current of the EHT in a TV.Â
As a side note, I believe Shango066 uses the same diodes as a solid state rectifier but he uses them in parallel rather than series.Â

I got bored waiting for some rubber to cure... so I googled Bernard Smith. Google returned be a youtube video of their shop refit in 2012 and a telephone number. I rang it, and spoke to a lovely lady called Jess, and it turns out that Bernard Smith's was bought out by HBH Woolacott some years ago, but is still there... There's still a mention above the door.
@slidertogrid Hi Rich, I found the lopt primary runs hot and fails. I run my set with the mains input set to 250v and that seems to solve the issue. The primary is relatively easy to rewind as it's on top of the bobin.

Certainly has signs of running hot. This set's already set to 240/250V. Ran beautifully all last night, with the CRT just getting sharper and sharper 😊
