Hello again. could someone point me in the right direction of the fault with this set. when switched on all i can get is a blank raster and no sound on 625 except for a occasional radio station. and as usual im lost. thanks neil.
Does it work on 405?
If not, it's the IF stages. The radio stations you hear are 6Mhz 'babble'.
If it does work on 405 but not on 625, then are you getting volts to the 625 Tuner (Transistorised) and are the cables OK.
Cheers,
Steve P.
Hi Steve. i dont have a signal to test whether 405 works or not so cant actually say for definate that it does. cheers neil.
Not even a signal generator that will do Ch 1?
Do you have a source of 625 Line signals off air where you are?
Cheers,
Steve P.
Ok. well ive switched it to 405 and got some noise on screen while turning the tuner. would that suggest its alright or do i need to find a signal of some sort to test it. cheers neil.
That suggests the tuner and possibly the IF are OK. Are there volts getting to the UHF tuner?
Cheers,
Steve P.
Steve. yes there is 12 volts going to the uhf tuner. cheers neil.
Do the following:
Switch off Set.
Swap the tuners over - Bottom of the I.F. board.
Switch to 625.
Switch on the set.
Operate the 405 tuner like before and see if you see anything.
Same with the 625 tuner with the set switched to 405. Put a strong 625 signal in and see if you can tune it in.
The line hold will be wrong and there will be no sound, but you should be able to see a picture in a way!
Cheers,
Steve P.
Steve. tried that and not a jot on either 405 or 625. cheers neil.
OK, Put it back to normal. You really need a signal generator or 405 signal source to find out for sure here.
Clean and check the system switch. Plug in 3 new IF valves (V204 - EF183, V205 - EF85, V206 - EF184) and see what happens. Then check voltages around them as well on Both Standards.
Have you got the manual or R&TVS diagram for this set?
Cheers,
Steve P.
If not I'm sure when Stan pops in he will ensure the Library has a copy for all to follow.

I have posted a copy of the Radio and Television Severcing information for the Philips 19TG164A in the Library (just for Steve).
Regards Stan.
Thanks Stan. Hopefully Neil will update us on this set soon.
Cheers,
Steve P.
Ok well ive put in new EF183/184s but i dont have an EF85 to try. it has worked to an extent in that i have sound although low on 625. but no vision as such, all that i can get are unlocked rolling lines. would the EF85 cure it or will i have to look elsewhere. thanks neil.
Try a new PL84.
I had a similar problem on a Stella set which used the same chassis. There is an IFT to the left of the system switch which gave me a few problems. Lift the top off it and move the two trimmers inside it to the right with your hand.
If the signals burst through, then resolder all the joints in the can.
Cheers,
Steve P.
Steve. ive tried the coils and a new valve and its the same as before. cheers neil.
Is it not possible to borrow a signal generator. You really do need one, as I am not sure whether the fault is in the IF stages or the tuner.
Cheers,
Steve P.
Look at the setting of R128 and the value of R129.
Cheers,
Steve P.
Well i swapped the tuner for another one taken from a similar chassis a while ago. and nothing not even a glimpse of a picture. ive checked the coils and they seem ok when checked with a meter. so as usual im lost. cheers neil.
