Pye 169
Some of you may remember I converted my Pye 92 to use a Philips 210/300 LOPTx after the original failed.
Some of you may also remember that transformer also failed after a few years use 🙁
Well, it's sat there languishing in the corner of the workshop... staring at me with a forlorn blank CRT.
What's the chances of converting it to use a Thorn "Jellypot"?
If there's a chance, what sort of Jellypot should I be on the lookout for, given my 17" CRT?
Thanks in advance,
Doz.
Hi Andy,
You have quite a wide choice for your 17" but it would really help to know what the PYE 169 CRT needs kV-wise. I guess the main complications arise from how you tie in the Jelly-pot and adapt your PYE chassis to mount it. However, If anyone can do it you can, of that I'm certain. ?
Without knowing the kV requirement, assuming 15kV-ish, perhaps the following:-
- 950 with a three-stick (15kV)
- 960 with a three-stick (15kV)
- 1400 with a three-stick (15kV)
- 1500 with a three-stick (15kV)
I might be able to help with a 1400 LOPT if that was a viable drop-in, I believe I have a couple in stock. As for the rectifier trays, I have a fair few in stock but I'm not sure what versions. I seem to remember I have 4 and 5 stick, though there could be a 3 in there. Not too much of an issue as It's fairly easy to make your own tripler.
As ever there's a mine of useful information available up top under "Service Dept". These two articles will aid you in your query/decision, hope that helps.

Anyway, some food for thought and hope that helps you in your quest.

@crustytv Thanks Chris,
The Mazda CME1713 requires around 17KV... which is, of course somewhere in between the available 15KV and 20KV versions available... nevermind, I can always tweak the line tuning to cope. I guess persuading a 1400 20KV type to do 17KV would be much less stressful than persuading a 15KV tray to do the extra 3KV...
Time to break out the 1400 schematic and have a look ...
Off to the library batman!

Agreed, and I do believe I have both a 1400 lopt and a 5-stick, fingers crossed, off to the stores to check now.

Hi Andy,
I do indeed have a 1400 lopt and a 5-stick rectifier tray, in this format giving 20kV.
They have your name on them should you decide the PYE conversion is do-able. ?

Why is the bit I need to see always on the join between two pages !! ? ?
The library currently holds Trader, LLJ and RT&S ccts for the 1400 but not BRC/Thorn manufacturers data. I do have the actual Thorn manual for the 1400 but never got around to scanning it. Perhaps this is a S.O.D. moment?
What specific area are you looking at on the 1400cct, I guess the lopt, as a quick exercise I can scan the relevant section for you ensuring no join, then post a photo in the thread.

Here you go a snippet of the 1400 from Thorn manual, also supplied the PYE 169 (available up top view the free B&W service data) for those wishing to play along at home, hope this is adequate. I will put the Thorn 1400 manual on my list of tasks to get fully scanned.

Just a quick observation, the lopt shown in the pictures is from a 980/981 chassis which is 405 of course. The correct EHT tray for that chassis is just a rectifier, three sticks in series.
John.
That'll teach me to rely what's written on the storage box and not pay attention to my own documentation. Clearly and as John rightly points out, the LOPT pictured is a 980 jelly-pot. ?
- 980 = Black body - no spot, part No.00D4-031
- 1400 = White body - Red spot, part No.06D4-002
Sorry to have got your hopes up Andy. ? The lopt I have is only up for 10kV. I was sure I had 1400 but I may have already passed it on to another member and used the 1400 box to store this spare 980. Sometimes I'm a dozy twonk!
Hopefully someone here or perhaps over on UKVRRR, might have a 1400 lopt going spare.

Such is life!
So if anyone has a suitable 1400 transformer & rectifier tray, or a complete set with a shot tube etc... let me know!
A quick squizz at the schematic it all looks possible.
I thought I would have a look on eBay, see if any 1400 chassis were available, perhaps a foolish hope but I had a few minutes to spare but nothing found. What struck me was the asking, not selling price of some items, seem very high compared to a few years ago with many suggesting they be used for props in stage and screen.
On the the other hand I could be what my late wife called me, “ carefull”. I am back in Suffolk on childminding duties and I took the girls out for lunch yesterday, one sausage sandwich, two children's pizzas and 3 soft drinks, £28!
Perhaps I am just not update with prices anymore.

How much of this stuff actually sells for the asking though? I did have a look on eBay last night also. One will come up....
There was a 24” HMV 1500 on EBay in London went for £30 just a few days ago. 1400 sets do occasionally turn up usually in the guise of the 16” Ferguson courier but the 20” 1500 models appear fairly regularly and would be ideal for your needs.
John.
Andy, there's a 24" HMV 2808 (1500 chassis) you might like to bid on. It's in Kent and currently at a sensible price, but who knows how long that will remain so. Watch out if you win it, you're likely do what we all end up doing, feeling sorry for it and decide to repair it rather cannibalise it for the LOPT.
p.s.
If you have trouble finding it, pm me and I will send you the link.

When I saw the above post I thought the sale must have fallen through, it has be the same set as the one recently but it's not. So two 2808s in the same month. Good luck if you go for it ?
John.
Try as I might, I'm damned if I can find this listing. Does anyone have a link?
Hi Andy,
No problem, I've pm'd it to you.
For future reference all you needed to do was search "HMV television". Then on the left-hand side you would select the "television" tick box filter, then you would have found it, there are only 7. Just for clarification I wasn't being awkward its just e-bay links are not permitted in the open forum. I won't bore you or everyone with the reasons why, they are covered in forum rule #6. ?
