Pye Continental CTM17S.

The picture on this Pye Continental has become very dim. All attempts at boosting the CRT are now just a waste of time. The CRT is worn out. Fortunately I have a spare Cossor MW43-69 which will be used as the replacement. the Cossor tube was made by Mullard.Unlike Marc's Pye Continental which has the full specification fringe area 17F chassis my set is fitted with the very basic hand wired 17S chassis. Direct line sync, mean level vision AGC and only one loudspeaker.

In the Mullard Maintenance Manual there no mention of the MW43-64 being aluminised, simply that it has a grey glass screen. So it follows the tube would definately require an ion trap magnet. The MW43-69 is described as having a metal backed grey glass screen.

Otherwise the two tubes are interchangeable. I suppose they could have dispensed with the ion trap on the later tube. Don't forget that these tubes were designed by Philips and had the companies unique pentode gun assembly. Possibly Mullard had something to do with the design of the straight gun Z tubes.

Mazda made two 90 degree 17 inch CRTs, the magnetic focus CRM173 and the electrostatic focus CME1702. The latter did not have an ion trap magnet. If you think about it, such a device would be completely out of the question on a three gun colour tube.
