That's endorsement enough that this thread and the blog article are doing exactly what I hoped, fully documenting Thorn's stable.

Aidan mentioned in his e-mail that there might be as little as six survivors (that are known to the communities) of the 1580 left.

Hi Andrew, I've been looking for one for many years without success. The vast majority of the sets you see with that styling are the 1590 with the fully transistoried chassis. The 1580 is curious chassis, a cross between the 1500 basically using its signal stages and line stages taken from the 980/1, different oscillator valve but same multivibrator design and of course 15.625kHz.

John.

I took a look though my BRC file this evening, and found a few missing chassis;

Already mentioned the 1580 mains only portable, I've also fancied one of these, but I think they are quite rare.

The TX90 based MC05 has been mentioned, it made the cover of "Ferguson Feedback" in 1986;

There is also the 1790, which I think was Thorns last monochrome TV, small PCB, three IC's.

There's one of those 38030's in my storage unit! It's been rather neglected since I've had it, which is a shame as it's a good set. I haven't even got any good photo's of it 🙁

I also have one of those, badged Ultra. The rear cover looks slightly different, but otherwise it looks the same. Also got a TV22 with that chassis in it (don’t ask...!)

Hi Chris,

Depending on how far back you want to go, I also have a 306T and a TX90, but they are a bit difficult to get at right now.

Hi Jon,

I think the article should include all Ferguson Thorn sets right back to the 1949 841. On those earlier sets we're unlikely to know the chassis designation, so will be listed by model number. I'll start adding place holder sections later today.

Hi Chris,

if you want you can use any of the photos of my 204T from the thread on it, if they are no good I can get some new ones done 🙂

Regards

Lloyd

Just added the Thorn 800 chassis to the article, thanks to Marc. ?

The set in question is a 1959 HMV 1890 ( Thorn gobbled up HMV in 1957) which Marc believes it to be an 800 series chassis and I tend to agree. I've looked at a later 850 series and Marcs looks subtly different especially noticeable in the dropper area. Of course if we've got it wrong or if anyone believes differently with evidence, please speak up as I want the article to be as accurate as humanly possible.

Like Chris I would also love to know for certain which chassis this HMV is, I'm only guessing it's an 800.

I've now established the HMV 1910 used the Thorn 600 series chassis  ?

Yes I believe that's correct Chris, I think my guess of it being an 850 is actually the dual standard type and the 800 is convertible type so that may throw doubt upon the HMV 1890 being 800 ?  ?

Its a minefield back in these earlier decades and way out my comfort zone, but its well worth documenting it once and for all with photos.

OK, so it now looks like the HMV 1890 is a 500 chassis or at least it looks to be the same type (500) as fitted to the Ferguson 506T

I'll keep researching.....

I had no idea there was a 600 series designated chassis until I read below, my BRC chassis document stopped at the 700 series.

John Wakely

"The 850 chassis was the last in a long line of double decked chassis first designed by Thorn for use in the then new 110 degree tube format in model 506T of 1959.

This evolved into the 600 and 700 series 405 line receivers and the convertible 625 800 series.

The oval mains dropper with it's many hot spots was a constant problem with the 850 and lessons were learned with the much improved single deck 900 series leading the way to the 950 and 1400 models.

The HMV 1910 uses the 600 series chassis from around 1960/61"
