I have recently purchased a universal tripler off of ebay. I thought it might be useful in the future. I have a couple of sets now sitting on one side becuase the overwind has went on the lopt. They are otherwise goods sets and I dont think the Cossor is very common so it would be good to preserve it. The first is a cossor 926, I think it has a 12 in round tube. I wasnt really thinking about the tripler for this. However i have a dual standard Bush. I think it is a TV 125 or a variant on that. I think the overwind is failing in that. It set me thinking how useful is a universal tripler for vintage monchrome sets. Would its application really only apply to early colour sets ?

Should be usable for ANY application where the PIV rating (per stick/diode) and current drain rating are not exceeded.

Two can be used as x5, but at about 1/2 current and the PIV per stick is the same, so higher overall voltage.

With such circuits only the input voltage counts. The units can be chained indefinitely to ANY voltage (apart from any last capacitor to 0V), but the current available drops dramatically.

Nothing stopping you chaining 10 x 20KV units to get near 200KV but at tiny current! You would want them mounted between a pair of perspex sheets for that though!

Universal triplers were for ctv as far as i can remember. Mono sets used various types, doublers, 3 stick, 5 stick etc.

the best to use are the ones from thorn 1400/1500.
start with 3 stick and if eht is too low try a 5 stick input can be taken from the lopv anode.
