1973 DECCA CS1830/B
The almost 10 year hunt is finally over ?
Those that know me or have followed my journey over the past 10 years, will undoubtedly know I have been searching for our families first colour Television. You can read about what a catalyst TV it was here.
Now the problem is the CS1830 came in many guises, the control panel sometimes to the left or right of the speaker. Sometimes the speaker grill is not full length, sometimes the CRT surround is black vinyl and many have the varicap tuner. The set we had is firmly fixed in my mind, it had the old clunky manual tuner and the control layout to the far right of a full length speaker grill, housed in an all teak cabinet.
Well guess what turned up on e-bay? Yes remarkable! the exact set, it had my name on it no matter what!
I won't say too much about the bidding (Vrat rules) but needless to say at the end of the auction I hadn't won the TV despite having put in a hefty bid and I mean hefty. However I had a sneaking suspicion I would get a call the next day (I suspected someone had bid fever) with a second chance offer and low and behold I did, obviously I agreed my price.
Today was spent in the fantastic company of John (Jayceebee). I contacted John as I was after a "Car Buddy", the thought of an eight hour round trip on my own was a little daunting and into an unknown area. John not only agreed to come along but also offered to do the drive and the use of his company car, also he had travelled the destination many times before. Words seem so inadequate to express my gratitude to John, but I am deeply grateful for him spending the time doing this. For me spending eight hours talking with an ex D|E|R and Thorn TV engineer and capped off with collecting this long sought after TV, was an absolute treat of a day. Thank you John for your help, kindness and your fantastic educational company?
The TV was found by the gentleman I bought it from, sitting on a roadside next to a skip ready to be dumped. The gentleman had the foresight to stop then ask the skip owner if he could have it, they agreed. Two important people in the chain of events who saved this TV from being destroyed and thereby helped it on its path to me.
The set is complete and in reasonable condition. The cabinet has water marks due to being out in the rain but nothing a light sanding and oiling cannot resolve. The brightness knob at the bottom was broken off leaving just the nub. I searched my extensive box of CTV knobs and had the exact one in stock and I mean "one". I had just the one exact knob among probably 2000 knobs, is that not fate saying this TV was meant to be here.
The TV was powered up by the previous gentleman on a variac, the set came up with sound and a full raster. Shortly thereafter it developed a frame collapse and that is where it was left before passing on to my ownership.
Expect a Vrat-Tube video covering this sets return to health but before that I have the N1500 to finish but just had to post and tell.
I'm praying the CRT is good and that the LOPT holds up, only time will tell.

A pleasure Chris and a great day out, just a pity about the weather. I know how thrilled I was when I managed to obtain the same model of our first TV, like you I had been watching for an example for years and had virtually given up hope but for you to obtain the exact 1830 variant is just the icing on the cake.
Much better on the inside than I was expecting and hope the CRT has decent emission, as Frank has noticed it's being operated blue gun down.
Best of luck with it.
John.
Posted by: NuvistorIt looks in excellent condition, is this the Bradford chassis?
Yes Frank, its the 30-Series Bradford chassis, the differences are its an 18", 20kV produced by a voltage doubler and it has simplified convergence without transducer.

Fantastic news Chris. I mentioned over on the Facebook group that you had been after this exact model for years. I'm really happy for you although it cost a fair bit more than my CS1730 which I got a few years back from a house in Wimbledon. This era of sets seem to have risen in value.
All the best, Tas
Now I had seen that set on ebay and immediately thought "That belongs to Chris".
I am really pleased my thought came to be reality ! ?
Looking forward to reading all about it, and I happen to have a spare frame output transformer if in the unlikely event it is needed. ?

Just wondering if anyone has one of these stands sitting about and going spare, or knows the location of one to buy.

Chris, can you pick me some numbers for this week's lottery please? You're certainly on a roll at the moment. ?
John.

Chris, can you pick me some numbers for this week's lottery please? You're certainly on a roll at the moment.
I can certainly oblige if you remember to bung a little my way should it be a big win ?
I've also just bagged the last in stock, NOS Decca 1830 Lopt. It wasn't cheap at just over a third of what I paid for the entire set but needs must. After waiting so long to get the TV I'm not taking an chances, I see it as an insurance policy. The LOPT is specific to the CS1830/1730, is smaller than the standard Bradford and is designated Weyrad 093 and is not interchangeable with the other 25kV Weyrad-057.
Now all I need to find is an 1730/1830 doubler and I will be sorted for the critical spares.

Would I be right in assuming that the chrome stand was exclusively for the smaller models?
To understand the black art of electronics is to understand witchcraft. Andrew.
Yes, as evidenced by the DECCA brochure. The larger 20" and 22" sets had their own unique black metal stand or wood was available if preferred. The 26" table model only had the ubiquitous wooden stand option and obviously the 26" console, was a console. ?
