Hi, whilst searching my spares dept i have come across blue plastic folder about 8in x 6in with Ferguson printed on it. It contains the operating instructions, installation instructions and the cct diagram for the Ferguson ctv model 3C05, which is the rare 4000 chassis. It looks to me as if it is the first time the info has been removed from the plastic folder. If Chris finds it usefull for the data library he is welcome to scan it. I will get one of my boys to post a couple of pics later, Malc.

A very interesting find, as you will probably know the C in the model number denotes an export model. The only 4000 sets specifically marketed in the UK I know of were the Ferguson 3731 (never seen one in the flesh), HMV 2726 both retail sets and DER 5762 for the rental market. We also had another model within DER which was a 5Cxx (can't remember the last two digits) which were originally destined for South Africa but never made it. These were VHF/UHF with a socketed ELC2000 series tuner, the IF and decoder bore a lot similarities to the five IC design in the 8500/8800.

Sadly as we all know the 4000 wasn't well received, the remote control circuitry was ultrasonic with all its problems. Being a Thorn it introduced us techs to the next generation of SMPS, the parallel chopper circuit. It also used a large number of hybrid thick films particularly in the convergence circuitry which could be troublesome but when working correctly, due to its complexity and thin neck CRT in my opinion gave the probably the best convergence of any large screen delta gun CRT. No fiddling round the CRT neck with this one, you detached the convergence board which was like a corded remote control and took it around to the front where you had control of both dynamic and static.

I would love to see a scan of this, it sounds very interesting.

I don't think I have ever seen that chassis before as in previous posts on here and Vrat.

The cabinet of the 3C05 appears to be identical to the DER 5762. On the circuit diagram of the PSU, the resistors shown with black bodies are part of thick film packs.

Malc refresh my memory, what is the IC type shown in the diagram. Was it a TCEP100E or something similar? Remember changing a few.

Don't forget whoever is lucky enough to find a 4000 series set I still have a few spares including the specialist ICs and thick film assemblies which I'd be willing to donate to the restoration process.

1 x 22" 3500
1 x 26" 3500
missing 4000
1 x 17" 8000
1 x 19" 8500
1 x 22" 8800

Err, just watch out for signs of bird-flu! - If you see any components marked "H5N1" run like hell.......geekThere is also a newer version, but it is 'backward compatible'......innocent
