Granada CG1737
Today I took delivery of my little Granadacolour / Decca CG1737 , it’s a Decca CS1730 clone
this is the 17 inch version of the more popular CS1830
this set uses an electrostaticly focused crt , fortunately this set has had a new crt fitted not that long before the set was taken out of service as the reading are all guns at 100% on my leader crt tester .
on first examination the set was dead with the internal mains fuse blown but testing reveals no shorts on the mains side or the HT lines so I inserted a new fuse & powered the set up via a variac, I got to about 100volt on the variac when the fuse gave out , now being as the previous owner said he had tested the set but it didn’t work made me think possible damage to the main smoother 400uf +400uf at 350 volt so I removed it & had a go at reforming it but this wasn’t going to happen as the inline fuse (for protection ) failed at 50 volts but no shorts were detected now I haven’t got a replacement for this so I reformed a 300 +300uf as a substitute
The set now powers up ,all heaters lighting up, the sound comes up & the eht but no picture/ raster a few voltage checks didn’t reveal much but a poke around the power panel the preset brightness control was at its minimum position I reset this to its mid position to reveal a raster short on height & tilted . After setting up the set & a clean of various presets I had a half decent picture
now there are still a few things to do like the horizontal shift control is very spotty so that will need replacing & the focus preset seems to do nothing but all in all I’m quite happy with the results so far
Fantabulous ! ?
To understand the black art of electronics is to understand witchcraft. Andrew.
Well done for the progress so far, ex-Granada sets don't seen to common compared to the ones from Radio Rentals (normally Baird badged) & Rediffusion
My parents rented from Granada until 1984, the last set was either a GEC or Thorn, but I've not been able to find a picture of an exact match online.
A nice little set, I think. As for the focus control, there is virtually no perceptible change from one end to the other on my Decca CS1730 either!
Is this the low voltage focus CRT and is it a Japanese type.
Frank
Hi Frank ,
I haven’t taken out the crt yet to find the label but yes it is a low focus voltage tube
another difference is the tuner on this set it’s a 4 button mechanical tuner rather than the normal Decca 5 button ( 5th button for tuning)
