Hi, a friend of mine has asked me to look at his 8 year old LG42px5d plasma tv. There is sound but no pic. Voltages to both sus boards are ok and there is a faint buzzing from the display. Led 024 on the main pcb is unlit, others are.
Any ideas? Malc.

Hi Malc, You will probably need deep pockets to repair this, at 8 years old it is at end of life. Check that the heatsinks on the y and z sustains boards are getting warm after the set is on for a while. If the y sustain one is cold then the hybrid ic under the heatsink is probably faulty. Also check the buffer board ic's for pinholes as this is a common problem. If the z sustain heatsink is cold then again the hybrid ic will be faulty, these are available from ebay but are a pig to remove. Usually with these sets the upper buffer and y sustain boards need changed which is very expensive. Norman

Hi Norman, the large sustain pcb on the left is stone cold, the one on the right is working temperature. Looks like a visit to the tip, Malc.

Hi Malc, If the chip is cold they are available from ebay around £30.00 but you must check the two buffers on the feft for pin holes in the chips. Norman

Hi Norman, as this is the first time it has failed in over 8 years of constant use it is getting dumped. No point in spending money on a set of this age. It has done very well. I have saved the psu from it, Malc.
