CTV Teleton portable

I took delivery today of this long awaited portable set
it’s a Teleton CPL-14BS a 14” solid state set from approximately 1976 this set came to me from a contact on Facebook but had to be collected from Scotland , a good friend collected it on my behalf and delivery it to me today
when I worked for Telebank as an apprentice we sold hundreds of these sets as seccond sets they were very reliable as I don’t recall seeing any back for repair
This set is in very good condition inside and out and for a portable is quite heavy I wouldn’t like to trust the carrying handle too much
the crt is a 370TB22 a delta low focus volt and on testing reads 100% on all 3guns
the chassis is very well constructed if a little compact , it has a rotary tuner covering 21 to 69 on uhf , the mains lead was a botched up affair with lamp wire but as this set has a figure 8 socket on the back I failed to understand why this was done but it was removed and replaced with the correct lead
Testing :a quick resistance check revealed no problems so it was brought up slowly on the variac
sound was first to come on slowly followed by a raster with the usual snowy noise on the screen
a signal was applied and everything seemed fine , nice bright pictures , nice bright colours perfect sound so after years of slumber it woke up without any problems so it really shows how well these sets were made back in the 70’s and now I know why I never seen any back for repair
a quick clean of the cabinet and and it ran well all afternoon .

Nice to see, my Aunt & Uncle had a B&W portable by Teleton with the Atom logo badge covering up where the VHF tuner would have been.
Yes, that same TV with a VHF tuner was sold in Oz in large numbers, branded "General".
Utterly reliable.
These sets must have been amongst the last Delta TVs we saw.
Strange colour decoder, as I recall it used two parallel channels for U and V to get around the PAL patents.

@irob2345 Hitachi were producing 19/20 inch full D-PAL sets in around 1974, whether they paid the patent fee or the patent had run out I don’t know.Perhaps the patent was still valid or Teleton decided since they had the design working for their decoder they kept on using it.
Japanese TV sets tended to be very reliable in the 1970’s compared to UK ones. Their reliability seemed to wane somewhat between 1979-81 and then recover again.

Teleton are bombproof sets. I have the metal cased valved model, been stored over 40 years. Must dig it out and see if it still works.

I remember them, so easy to brush against those exposed fuses at the back. Somewhere I have a box of valves from the earlier Teleton models the weight of which always surprised me.
Best wishes, Geoffrey.

I just bought a couple of metal case Teleton hybrid sets lasr night.Posted by: @malcscottTeleton are bombproof sets. I have the metal cased valved model, been stored over 40 years. Must dig it out and see if it still works.

Saw a few of these over the years. Took careful decoder setting up to minimise the hanover blinds, especially visible on reds & oranges.
