OK here's one for you, I have a batch of these, capacitors, I'm trying to ascertain the rated voltage. The code on the cap is as follows:-

A50     - is this the voltage 50V?
472M  -clearly the code for 4700pF/4.7nF/.0047uF
C929  - no idea

Any ideas on the voltage front?

I would guess 50 volts but there is an easy, non-destructive way to find out.

Obtain a source of about 500 volts - TV B+Boost?

Connect a 1M resistor and the cap in series.

Put a (high impedance) meter across the cap.

Switch on.

See what the voltage goes up to.

Halve it to get your safe working voltage.

👍Thanks Ian, I'll try that, my bridge can supply up to 500V.

I have some similar small caps in various values, not with those number. They are all 50v rated however.

That seems to be a reasonable assumption.

A - axial

50 - 50Vdc

472 - 4700pF or 4.7nF

M - tolerance 20%

C929 - also no idea. Perhaps manfacturers batch code or something.

Interesting measurement technique. I presume that's still putting excessive voltage across the dielectric though, all be it with limited current?
