Workshop Testing remote controls and analysing the codes
I have a neat piece of software that allows you to sample IR remotes and view their output, both as a waveform and as binary or hex.
It does a lot more besides and comes with a large library of "codesets", many of which include useful signals like discrete On and OFF codes and discrete source selects. Also import and exports from other formats. And RS232 codes and the means of testing them.
Here is a screenshot:
Now the company that created this used to be mine but now belongs to my daughter. Like me, this technology is now old, unwanted and forgotten!
Anyway, would there be any interest in posting the installer on this site as a free download?
Very interesting!
Jac
In times past, a former colleague of mine did something similar to analyse remote control codes but in this instance, it was to allow DVD recorders to be remotely stopped, started and most importantly, finalise their discs when they were used to produce programme 'rushes'. The machines were started and stopped by the same control system used to control the VTRs in the studio. He then transferred the codes into PICs on a small sub-board in the machines and controlled them from there: the system was in parallel with the original remote controls so no functionality was lost. He also produced a local control panel so the machines could be run from within the technical area.
I would certainly be interested in seeing that. Most useful.
What is the procedure for submitting files to this site for download?
File size limits?
The full installer cw codeset library is about 11MB from memory. If this is a problem I may be able to build one with most of the library omitted (but that would be a shame)
.exe files are not permitted to be uploaded to the forum, for obvious security reasons. However, the file can be made available to members via our site temporary data library, where it can remain as a permanent file for download. To get the file to me, either e-mail it or make it available for me to download via a Dropbox or equivalent, I will then place it.

OK, I'll have a look on the Windows 7 box upstairs and see if I still have the installer builder. If I do, there is the option of building it as an MSI, would that be better?
Hi Ian, it's entirely up to you .exe .msi, it makes no difference, the file will be treated exactly the same, stored in the central repository, namely the data library. 👍
p.s.
When you are ready to make it available, pm me and I will provide my e-mail address.

OK, I had a look at the Setup build last night and I found that if I remove all the macros from the library (they are of no use unless you want to get into our system programming environment) it reduces the setup exe to just over 2MB -quite manageable. The actual IR codeset files are quite small.
I'll make a custom VRAT build tomorrow night, these 5:30 rises to beat the traffic make for a long day.
I'll also write an addendum to the manual with some more tips on making your own IR sampler and how to set up the auto library search for a match facility. Oh, and how to use the sampled IR codes in your own devices.
If I include the setup exe in a zip and attach it to an email, will your email system pick it up and reject it?
Oh, maybe I've missed it somewhere but I can't see how to PM you!
It's very simple, look at my post above yours, under my profile picture you will see an envelope, just click on it.
