1.  Nope, the oscillator is innocent. Heating up with a hair dryer to ouch levels, and cooling with a bag of ice (not straight away, didn't want to crack the bottle) does vary it's output, but not by any significant amount.

 

2.  The moral? "To err is human, to make a real cock-up requires a computer"

1.  Which might suggest that the envelope is evacuated (as an aid to thermal stability)? But not gettered, for reason of potential contamination of the crystal? - However, you may have just found a way to check for a good vacuum?
