Okay, so it's working (with a bodge we may come back to later).

If you put 0.1uF across C4 and look with the scope at the emitter of TR1, what do you see? I suspect the answer will be "nothing".

Correct, I suspect what I'm seeing is the sensitivity of my scope.

Well, thanks for trying to help Mike, after 10-years of ownership, I'm not gutted as I have a very good use for the BBC module chassis, and the Pi is more than capable of outputting a tone. Now if I could just find a small B&W water slide decal of the earth to fit on the front, below the shutdown switch.
