For those of you who enjoy interesting fault finding, coupled with creative and inventive solutions, have a look at another gem from CuriousMarc. I think Peter Scott may like this series as I believe he worked for HP.

The Plot

When a gate fails inside a unique and specialised IC in your HP 8082A Pulse Generator, what do you do?

  1. Buy another machine to cannibalise for the elusive IC?
  2. Give up, walk away and live with the controlled delay fault?
  3. Perhaps reverse engineer the IC and mock up what it did on a mini PCB? Yep that sounds like a plan.

Yes, I can remember using those at HP. Quite a nice pulse generator. I haven't looked closely at it but you might find that performance was good enough with a MECL 10H109.
