My latest project

Many, many years ago the late Chas Miller used to run set construction competitions - at one time I used to judge those. I'm positive that was one of the designs he used for a competition.

Ah, selenium rectifiers, delightful. Now its a 1N4006, no smell. Be a good project to use up a few EF80s.

I recall seeing a post on the US site that asked how to test a selenium rectifier.
Here was the response:
1. Remove it from the set.
2. Hold it over an empty trash bucket.
3. Drop it.
4. If it makes a clunk, it is bad. Leave it there.

Mine was brand new old stock, I have a few of them so it should be OK for years to come.

I wouldn't be so sure, they are just like NOS paper caps.
