Chris has just uploaded 11 issues of Television magazine from 1972 into the Library. The May issue is missing as I cannot seem to find it at present, but I will upload it as soon as I find it and scan it.

I know Chris would like me to continue scanning the 1970’s issues of Television magazine, but a very kind forum member has sent me 14 issues from the 1950’s, which I have promised to scan and upload. I just wondered what other members of the forum would like to see in the Library, would you like to see the more modern colour magazines or the older 405 only magazines from the 1950’s?

I am quite happy to scan any magazines which will have the most interest.

Regards Stan.

Hi Stan,

More than happy for you to scan other copies to plug in the gaps in the earlier years or go with whats more popular, so please don't feel obliged to continue with the 70's.

I have collected almost all of the mags from 69-79 so can take up the reins for finishing the 70's off. I don't have the stamina to scan them as quickly as you do ( too many TV's to play with) but like the snail, I will get there in the end.

It also begs the question where do we stop? It goes without saying we should likely cover all from its inception but the latter years? I had considered we should be including the 1980's but I certainly don't think efforts should extend to the 90's or early noughties.

I think a good place to stop would be the end of 1989, if those carrying the work out are willing to carry on to that point. By that time UK manufacturing was in its twilight and TV sets were depressingly simple devices.

Filling in the holes in the 1950s would be good too, if we can all help out: if someone could summarise what's missing from the 1950s issues we can all look together. It is worth noting though that there are some natural gaps in publications as there were a number of printers strikes during the 50s so double-checking with the helpfully-provided issue numbers will be wise.

My own preferences are nearly already met by the library: my interest wanes around the time of d/s sets and colour, but I still find the articles interesting.

I have attached a file of the Television magazines I have scanned, uploaded and the magazines waiting scanning, any empty box means that I do not have a copy of that issue of the magazine. You may note that there are four missing issues from 1961, which I would like to get hold of to scan to complete all the 1960’s.

The technology has changed at an alarming rate, when you look back over all the years and if I ever get this project finished there will be lots of topics to discus in the forum.

Regards Stan.

PS sorry I cannot attach a docx or pdf file, I hope this is readable.

Stan,

unless you got them from Brian Cuff, I've just bought three of the missing 1961 issues from eBay, if you're interested in scanning them?

This excellent site has many of the copies you are missing.

You also have some of the copies they are missing, so I'm sure they will be only too pleased to do a swap!

It also has copies of Practical Wireless - some prewar and complete from complete from 1945 to 1989 - the complete collection of Radio Constructor from 1947 to 1981 and Wireless World from its inception as the Marconigraph in 1911 to 1986 with very few issues missing, all before 1942.

There are archives of many more radio and TV related magazines and journals - I doubt there is a more comprehensive archive anywhere else! There are more than four million pages ...

Hello Cathovisor

Yes Brian very kindly donated 14 issues from the 1950’s for me to scan and put in the Library.

In fact I Have just uploaded July 1952 for Chris to put in the library and two issues from 1950, August and December were uploaded last week.

I would be very interested in scanning the three issues you have from 1961, if I can complete 1961 we will have 15 years of Practical Television magazines uploaded to the Library. I always keep a look out at the various radio rallies and the NVCF for any missing copies.

Hello Terry

I am aware of that site, but the copies are scanned in grey scale and are almost five times the size of my efforts, but as I have started this mammoth task I am determined to finish it.

Regards Stan.

I would also add that Stan's scans are much better quality than those of ARH.

Stan - as it happens I have just purchased the final copy of the four missing 1961 issues via eBay, so that will complete the year!

If you can drop me a line with some details, I'll (hopefully) get them into the post this week.

Yes, but if Stan hasn't had a copy to scan, the scan on ARH is surely better than nothing?

Hello Cathovisor

That’s good news, that you now have all four missing copies of the 1961 Practical Television Magazines. I will be going to the NVCF on the 14th of May, if you are going perhaps we could meet up and exchange the magazines, this will save the postage one way at least.

If you are not attending I will send you my details and if you can tell me the cost of the postage I will re-reimburse your costs.

Regards Stan.

Stan, I note that your list stops at 1979. Do you intend to stop there?

We're clearing the house at the moment and I've come across a lot of issues from the 1990s but I'm sure some older ones will emerge when I get round to an old wardrobe in the spare room upstairs!

Unfortunately I did dispose of a lot in a blitz about 10 years ago or so and I found a few copies for Alan Pemberton to fill gaps in his collection.

Unfortunately, Alan doesn't post on any forums these days but his email address is in the Pember's Ponderings site - copy in the library - if it hasn't changed recently. It might be useful to drop him a line and ask if he has the copies you are missing and if he would be prepared to lend them to you.

As discussed in posts #2 & #3 I did not intend to store anything beyond 1989. The library currently only goes up to 1979, only due to me creating the folders that far, I shall in due course be adding the additional ones to take us up to 1989.

I read Cathovisor's comment on the subject but missed your definitive statement in the previous post, Chris.

I'm house clearing at the moment and don't have much time to do otherwise than scim these posts quickly, making it easy to miss pertinent details!

Anyway, the 1990's issues will got for recycling but if I come across any from the 80's or the ones that Stan is missing I'll put them to one side.

No problem Terry, easily done. I would hasten to add nothing is cast in stone, if enough members felt we really should cover the 90's then of course we would. Server storage is not a problem, I would just be loathed to burden Stan with another decade if they would not be read.

Understood, hope the move is not too stressful, de-cluttering can be very time consuming.

Good!

I thought I'd found one but, when I double checked it against the list it was the wrong year (1964)!

(At least the month was right!)

I'm in the process of throwing out all my pre-1987 copies of Wireless World as they are available on the ARH site if I need to refer to them again but I need to sort through them carefully as the pdf files omit the contents page on some issues - very annoying! I've identified 14 issues so far and, when I get back to my scanner in Hykeham, I will make copies before they go for recycling.

If anybody else uses the pdfs of WW from the ARH site and would like copies of the missing contents pages, I will be happy to let them have them.

I'll put up a post when I've scanned them.

Hello Cathovisor

I would like to thank you for the four missing issues from 1961 that you very kindly delivered to me at the BVCF on Sunday. I will scan these shortly and put them in the Library.

The only other copy I would like to get hold of at present is May 1972 as I appear to have mislaid my copy. I do have all issues of Television magazine, to the end of publication and I will eventually get around to scanning these when time permits.

The 50’s have a few holes in the issues, but I only need May 1958 to complete that year. I have all of 1957 and 1956 issues and only need February 1955 to complete that year.

At present I have loads of work to do, to scan all the magazines I already have, so there is no hurry at the moment and I would like to thank all the other members for their interest and help in obtaining the missing issues.

Regards Stan.
