Recently picked this up. The box measures 38cm x 27cm, so what do you think is in the box?

Spoiler
Was your guess close?

A brand new KT3 chassis, never been fitted.

The CRT PCB not even broken out from the main chassis PCB.

If I was into doing YouTube videos, this would have made a great unboxing, those videos for some reason seem to be very popular.

NOS Replacement Thorn Chassis? At one time I remember Netto in Avonmouth having 90" TX90 chassis brand new in boxes for an advantageous price. I bought a few from Carla there. Came in very handy for bits and replacing the odd broken PCB. They didn't have the mains TX with them though, just a bare chassis, but they were fully populated.

Just out of curiosity is it an early or later version? The latter used a single IC TDA3560 PAL decoder.

Wow I wonder if it was one of the bargains from "Sendz" They used to have a lot of manufacturer's surplus. Outside of the factory it must have had a limited market as a complete chassis? I doubt a dealer would ever need one with all the modules etc for a repair... Somewhere I have a NOS Thorn 950 bottom board, A 2000 PSU NIB and a 8800 convergence panel also NIB.  But a complete chassis? that is unusual.

That is an early Singapore build Philips KT3. It looks like the single chip chroma board.

The Oz built ones look exactly the same except the metal frame was not zinc passivate plated, it was made from pre-plated steel.

Very nice performer that chassis and quite reliable.

@doz wrong box for the TX90 chassis as I still have one, my guess is a Texan amplifier.

@crustytv what a amazing find that is, there was a KT3 on e Bay not that long ago but the chances of getting one with a good tube, was it A51 570? I can't remember now are very slim.

@michael-dranfield that must make one lucky old crusty, as I have an immaculate KT3 with a really good tube.

Nice find! I have a KT3 portable hidden in the shed, got it from the tip many years ago, doesn’t look as nice and clean as your chassis!

Regards,

The later grey front KT3 models were much better tube life wise,  I don't know if it was the tube that was improved or the heater supply. The earlier wood effect front sets were failing after 3-4 years but the heaters always looked a little underrun.  If you caught them early a slight reduction of one of the coils would make the heaters just a little more cherry red and the emission would soon improve. I didn't short the coils I scraped the varnish off half of one and then ran some solder over it. Then often the tube would improve and last longer than it had originally. when the sets got really old you could always extend the solder to give them a bit more... I liked the KT3 and K30 you could count the common faults on the fingers of one hand! Compare that to the ICCrap!

The A51-570X was also used in the Thorn 9900 chassis and I think it's fair to say that a set over 4 years old a good CRT was quite rare to see. The A51-580X used in the TX9 was slightly better, I think it's basically the same CRT but N-S raster correction was taken care of in the design of the scan coils. The A51-590X followed in the TX100 which needed no raster correction at all.

The Pye KT3, went to Manchester to attend the course/introduction on that set in 1980 at Belle Vue when it was first introduced. By the end of the year I had joined the BBC at Television Centre, bit of a career change.
