Before doing anything drastic, I would check the timing of the cassette housing. If you follow the article that Chris has posted, it tells you how to time the housing. It's so long since I wrote that, I would need to see the deck in front of me and the housing to see if the timing was wrong. Back in the day, it took only a moment to do it.....

I've not had time to do anything with it yet but this is the underside of the deck. Tried compressing the photo so I hope it still shows well enough.

Sorry...can't make out much from those pictures. One thing I always did was to remove the head cleaning roller.....nasty things....caused more trouble than they were worth.
