VCR Panasonic DMR EX98V

Hi everyone
My hard drive dvd VHS machine has locked up displaying U99. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've done the usual and unplugged it.
Kind regards Gary

@colourmaster Don’t know if this will help.

It states U99 error.
Displayed when communication error has occurred between Main microprocessor and Timer microprocessor.

@colourmaster A lot of the faults on these machines are down to the small electrolytics drying out in the various little switching regulators that generate 'odd' rails like the 1.8V supply. There's usually a six-pin chip and small inductor as part of the circuit. I have the predecessor machine (the EX95) and changed a few caps in that.

Fully agree with @cathovisor, about seven years ago I repaired an earlier model, that was exhibiting all sorts of strange errors. Once the electrolytics were replaced, normal service was resumed. Get your soldering iron out, It may not be a G8 😉 but it's highly probable a simple fix.

@crustytv As long as the EX98 hasn't changed those electrolytics to surface mount ones 😉
I'm amazed at the prices those machines still realise on ebay and the like.
Actually I find the SMD electros easier to change than the through-hole ones.

The service manual for the device is now in the library for you. 👍
p.s
U99 is a DVD self diagnosis error code, not related to the VHS, or HD side, so at least you know where to start.

@irob2345 Depends if they've been glued or not. I still view the damned things - along with lead-free solder - as Engines of Satan.

I wonder if that generation of machine still ties the "digital" board to the DVD mechanism? AFAIK the calibration of the DVD mech (servos, laser power etc.) is all stored on that board.

Hi everyone,
Many thanks for all your advice, I've ordered a Panasonic repair kit for this model so I'll keep you posted.
Kind regards
Gary.

@colourmaster I didn't know those repair kits existed? Could be useful in the future...
