First let me say I have never, ever worked on one if these machines so my question may or may not be stupid, but what's this on top??

It looks like some sort of modification, the small switches are not original . The display is puzzling the machine obviously has it's own clock so that is a bit of a mystery. There was a Long play modification for earlier machines but this one is LP so it can't be that..

Mick ( MickMcMichael) worked for Visionhire maybe he will know?

This is very odd, the mod you have I've only seen on a N1700, the clock in the lid is for additional timer recordings i.e. single and double scheduled recording. The channel buttons are shared between the old and new clocks.

Got some more of these and they have a slider swith as well.
