I worked for a short while in a TV repair shop that used to re-gun tubes in the basement. Us ordinary repair-persons were forbidden to enter the area for safety reasons – tubes being pumped could crack or shatter.
The guy who did the re-gunning was profoundly deaf, but could lipread, and spoke very well. One day we were shocked by a loud boom, like a bomb going off. We felt the floor rise under our feet and spares fell off shelves onto the benches. We rushed to the stairwell and moments later the guy appeared with a shocked expression and covered white with dust, phosphors and aluminium particles. He said, “Did you hear anything?”
