Me too. Haven’t seen an ERT since leaving Currys in 1979. It used to make me envious of independents when I saw really interesting radios and hi-fis in the magazine as Currys were pretty conservative about things like multi-band radios etc.
I recall being sat eating my sandwiches and reading the Head Office bulletin with its news of new lines. I worked at EO8, S30 and S40 branches (Eastleigh, Southampton and Shirley (Nr Southampton). Happy days, if not exactly overpaid.
These make some interesting reading, it seems only the Japanese manufacturers were offering portables at this time, though some mid sized sets were available from the UK brands.
Thorn had made some 17″ sets early in the 1970s but these seemed to have been discontinued by this time..
I recall our first colour tv in the early (I think) 70s was a 17″ HMV, brought out, so it was said, because there would be large numbers of people buying right before a new tax came in, VAT I think. I did a comparison of the £ back then and now, and our little £169 telly would, today cost ten times that. Imagine paying £1700 – seventeen hundred pounds – for a 4 channel, low contrast, NO remote control TV?
Loved seeing the range and also prices in 1968, it was the year I started work at Currys and memories came flooding back.
