The G11 was a good set once the problems with the early models were sorted out. Early models were very sensitive to mains supply. A dodgy old two way adapter and it would throw all of it’s toys (and a fair bit of Silicon) out of it’s pram.
Lots of common faults but all easily repaired. When a set had been fitted with a replacement improved type smoother, A frame chip holder a few capacitors and all the dry joints attended to it would be quite reliable and most had a long life. A busy workshop always had a few and most engineers were pleased to see one. Which is more than can be said for some makes and models! It is strange that like cars, models that were once a common sight, suddenly they all seemed to disappear really quickly and are seen no more. The later PIL and 30AX models KT3 K30 etc were a big improvement, reliability was better with almost no inherent problems, (4R7 excepted!) Philips tried really hard to get the G11 right first time and lessons learned made the later sets much better. Some days you win, some days you learn…
Viva G11 !
