The focus control had negligible effect and there was
intermittent sparking from an unusual resistor (R218) on
the c.r.t. base panel, accompanied by black spots and
crackling on sound. Subsequently the picture went very
faint and dark.
R218 is a 47M0 resistor which is in series with the focus
control. Replace it along with R347 (28M0) on the tripler
(feed to the focus control) or alternatively replace the
whole lot with a Thorn
