We settled on selling TDK cassettes in the 1970’s, we tried other makes but the TDK just worked, build quality was excellent, no returns and the audio performance was what was expected of hi-grade tape.
We only sold a few reel to real tape machines, nearly everyone was happy enough with the quality and ease of use of cassettes, so sold very little reel to reel tape. Appreciate purists would argue that reel to reel performed much better than cassettes but no point stocking them if sales are to few, may as well put the money into items that sold well.
