Posted by: @slidertogrid ……generally didn't seem to be liked outside of the rental firms that had them Hi Rich, they weren’t even liked in the Thorn Rental outlets at the time either. Back in the ...

RE: Amiga A500 (Mini)

My daughter has one and I still have an A500 and A500+, the + was damaged by the “Death by Varta” leaking RTC battery. The A500+ does work but has graphics issues in some modes, not sure if it’s due l...

RE: RF Modulators, UHF 625.

I’ve just been looking at a Vision brand VSB modulator and the price is eye watering, also it needs extras. I use a Panasonic VCR, the RF out channel can be set anywhere between 21-68 and can be used ...

RE: 1983 Ferguson 3850 - Thorn 1615 "Restoration"

Unitra is Polish. C.S.S.R. is the former Czechoslovakia, those and ones from C.C.C.P. when sat next to a UK produced CRT looked decidedly sepia in comparison. Well done for saving it.

It's certainly looking good now, bit of alignment which should improve things even more. The remote fault should be interesting for you, Deep down I knew you were going to come up trumps with this bu...

Arghh,!!! PYE Chelsea syndrome. Same IC TCA270 in common, Must be a very fussy chip but never had problems like this in the past. The caps later became a cherry/brown colour

@Cathovisor The film caps are ERO but the electrolytics are definitely ROE. Attachment : roe.bmp Oops, didn't mean it to be that big.

Try running with F551 on the remote board removed, this will isolate all of the TTL stuff.

Yes, AGC action is as expected and nothing jumps out in those IF voltages but something has changed. Since you substituted the tuner the pictures now look much less noisy than they did, I know said yo...

You can ignore the AFC for the moment, that has no bearing on the main fault you are chasing at present. A check the IF amp transistor voltages might reveal something.

RE: 1974 HMV 2726 Coloumaster; Thorn 4000

Quick update, just checked on the 9600 I’m seeing 2.8v on the AGC pin of the tuner. Adjusting the AGC crossover pot causes the voltage to go higher which reduces the RF gain. Looks like your TCA270 is...

RE: 1974 HMV 2726 Coloumaster; Thorn 4000

Pin2 seems low but I can't be certain. The RF AGC control is done at pin 4 of the TCA270 but looking closer at the manual I expect it now to be at least 3V or little higher at pin 2 of the tuner. Can'...

Pretty sure it’s going to be the lower row of pins with pin 2 at the left and 10 at the right.

So pleased to see you tried the new vertical board, well done. Suspect your home made TF401 and TF402 would have done the business too. The fact the audio is reasonably OK means a good place to start ...

Posted by: @crustytv 👍 Not sure yet Lloyd, I think It's to do with N/S pin cushion Correct, adjusting the N/S phase and amplitude pots will put that right.

Ok, the noise seems different now to the first video. Possibly due to one or more of those orange ROE plastic capacitors. Great work so far though.

RE: 1974 HMV 2726 Coloumaster; Thorn 4000

Is there any test card audio present or is it unmodulated? I don't think that ELC is faulty, usually they go grainy or with a strong signal, smeary.

Well, you well know my opinion of the Mullard ELC1043 vs the Thorn SC4. What happens if you press the reset button and does the noise change when operating the Vol + & - on the RCU?

Convergence looks far better than either of my A823s after they were woken from their slumber meaning so far so good with the most unreliable TFs. Have you tried the remote?
