model 3787 was made by Nordmende, the FV1 chassis I believe, although I could be wrong about the chassis designation it was definitely made by Nordmende, introduced as an interim model just before the TX9 to fill a gap as Thorn didn’t yet have a colour portable ready to sell, it was replaced by the TX9.
The differences between the ICC7 and ICC8 are superficially minimal! The chassis visually looked identical, no major step change here!
Basically Thomson updated the microprocessor, updated the firmware, catered for 16:9 switching and better S-Video inputs, altered the auto grey scale circuit, changed the tube base to use a single IC instead of discrete components amongst a few other changes, probably to cheapen production costs.
Few pcbs were compatible with the earlier chassis, in actual fact the main PCB along with PSU, line, field timebase remained basically the same.
It was more of an ICC7 mk2.
There were significant differences “behind the scenes” but I am still not sure whether it merited a whole new chassis number? , as it wasn’t a total redesign.
Whether this was a marketing decision ? who knows?
This is why I usually I refer to them together as “ICC7/8”
No doubt Thomson had a rethink partway through and tried to catch up with Philips ? again who knows?
Thomson pulled the same trick again before selling out to the Chinese!
We were just getting to grips with the ICC20 when they brought out the ETC210 Chassis.
Now for anyone getting to grips with Thomson nomenclature, this how it goes: ICC-X = international colour chassis MK-X, IKC-X = international kit chassis MK-X, ETC-X = European Television Chassis MK-X. They had a few LCD chassis with similar nomenclature, as well as a few Plasma sets along with a few vcr/tv combis which deviated a bit from normal naming convention.
Anyway the spinoff from the ‘normal’ ICC20/21 was a totally updated ‘small signal’ chipset to cater for HDMI inputs, but also completely redesigned the operating system end.
Not a bad thing in itself I might add, and a welcome improvement, it did have massive improvements over the previous system and was easier to navigate, however the basic chassis was still an ICC20/21 with a different front customer facing end but stilt he same basic chassis! Again I am not sure how this a completely different chassis ?
To be fair to Thomson they did physically separate the small signal stages from the power and line stages on separate pcbs, so it was half an update at best! ICC21.5 anyone ?
Great to see these layouts again from the service manuals. My time was between the 800 Chassis and th 1400 Chassis, don’t think I touched the 1500. I remember that the 900/950 chassis had a buzzing noise and Thorn produced an ‘Anti Buzz Kit’. Basicaly a thick cardboard cut out to go between the mains transformer and the chassis.
